The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1917.

The belated list of New Year honors is now to hand and it is very gratifying to

Honored by His Mnipctv thp Ifino.

find that several prominent New Zealanders have been considered worthy of high marks of Royal favor. It will be however, that the name of Mr. Massey is missing from the list. We can hardly believe that this is other than the wish of the Prime Minister himself, for no other public man in this Dominion, since the advent of the war, lias done such Trojan service on behalf of Empire. In 1914 Mr. Massey, it may be recalled, was elected to the Privy Council—a notable distinction, which so far as New Zealand is concerned, is now shared only by one other resident, Sir Joseph Ward, Bart. With the coveted honor of “Right Honorable” Mr.. Massey may fel sufficiently rewarded for the help which he is giving his King, but we expect to .find that in due course further honors will be conferred upon him. The chief distinction allotted to a New Zealander on this occasion, it will be seen, falls to the Hon. Jas. Allen, Minister for Defence. In future Mr Allen will be styled Sir James Allen, K.C.8., and to-day he is the sole representative in this country of the Knights Commanders of that illustrious Order of whom there may not in all be more than 150 for military and 114 for the civil service of.

the Empire. This important rank, it may he mentioned, comes next-to the Knights Grand of various distinguished Orders, and is therefore the second highest form of knighthood. We heartily join in the widespread congratulations which will be showered on the Minister for Defence, who has, it will he agreed, had an enormous amount of work placed 4 on his shoulders ever since the outbreak of the war, and has proved a worthy occupant of this very important office. The Hon. Mr. Justice Denrnston has, too well deserved his elevation to the’ ranks of the Knights Bachelors. To-day he is the senior .Judge, ranking next to the Chief Justice, in con nection with the Supreme, Court ot this Dominion, having held office for just on 28 years. Colonel the Hon. Dr Collins has been made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George—a well merited recognition of his lengthy public and military services on behalf of this Dominion Dr. Collins' has sat in the -Legislative Council for the past ten years and for over thirty years has been prominently associated with military affairs. He was one of the promoters of the Volunteer Bearer Corps, and, in 1896, became a surgeon-ben tenant in the Field Artillery branch of the militarv-forces. Later he was ina e President of the Military Pensions , Board. As administrator of Samoa Colonel Logan has also done goo work, and he has well earned the reward of a Companionship of the Bath. Major C. R. McDonald, chief infantry instructor for .this Dominion has had conferred on him a brevet lieutanant-colonelcy. The additional honors awarded to this Dominion will he the subject of very great satisfaction.
