METHOD OF ELECTION OF RE-
PRE6FNTATIYFS
DISCTJSSION AT BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.
The proposed method of electing representatives to the Defence Committee was again discussed by the Borough Council last night. At the meeting of the Council a fortnight ago it was decided to defer the selection of representatives until last night, in the meantime the Labour Unions to have the opportunity of selecting a representative. The Poverty Bay District Council of the United Federation of Labor wrote/ informing tlie Council that Mr D. W. Coleman had been appointed the district council’s representative. Cr Munns‘said that the selection should be made by public vote. The difficulty was wluYt roll to take—tlie borough roll or the electoral roll. Cr Miller suggested that the borough roll should, if any, he used, for the Council was asked to select the representative. . . Cr Munns, continuing, said that lie was of opinion that a big principle was at stake. He believed tbat the most satisfactory method would be to elect the six representatives until April and then call for nominations and elect the committee bv vote, ne thought that such a method would save a lot of trouble and comment The Mavor said that he . did not think the Council had anything to sa> in the matter, as the Defence Committee had considered the matter and had asked the. Council to se.cct the "gtSSS’Sa tI.M if rt» Committee were asked to elect its menthol's lie was sure that it would agitt. He was sure that there would be no expense and those, who acted as poll clerks would not ask to be paw. The Mayor pointed out tut some of the local bodies had all cade appointed their representatives. It was hardly fair for the Borough Council to appoint their representatives tor three months while other local EatoW appointed thorns lot Vt that time the new Council could feofe mow members or -to* appointees m their oih , ‘ ed tlia t tion could be taken. the following men be asked to office till April: Messi s fefe wildish Birrell, Crs Brown, M.iUei, > IXI Ur^Hiil 1 thought that . the public SSt £ present c.mstituUd : 1 . r0 u,...,v work. n-o - -'- h »'.**•’ cct.oa support tne propos-a ••• by tlie people, and he UiU that the Council m ask g c , would be dictating C 'cl'tSess supported the mbjion. .. the incoming Lounui would have an opportunity ing the present Council's action m (decting fresh representatives.
