GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD
MONTHLY MEET IN G. The monthly meeting of the Harbor Board was held yesterday morning, there being present Messrs Towidey (Chairman), Brown, Hallamore, Palmer, Preston. Holden, Wallis, White, Witters, Smith, and Dr Collins. Mr Harold Dennett Heather was appointed to vote on the Board’s behalf at all forthcoming elections of members; of the Auckland Harbor Board.
Messrs Chvisp and Coleman, the Board’s solicitors, in forwarding the Native Land Court’s decision in tbo matter of the amount of compensation payable by tbe Board to the Native owners of Wai-o-hi-harore. No 2, stated that the amount of compensation payable was £1275, at the rate of £IOOO per acre. —-The account was passed for payment. Mr Meredith, secretary to the Marine Board, Launceston, wrote asking for information as to the process tffie Board employed in removing rocks. The matter was referred to the Engineer.
Mr A. 11. Kay, one of the Board's employees, wrote stating that lie had volunteered, and had been accepted for active service and asked the Board to consider some remuneration to his wife and two children. —It was I decided to make up applicant’s mill- ! tary pay to what he was receiving from the Board, for a period of six months, re-application to he made at the end of that period. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer-Secretary, Mr J. A. McDonald, reported as under: Electric light for ships:—-The local manager of the Union 3.5. Co. has drawn mv attention to Gazette notice of June 29, 1916. relating to working cargo on ships. He draws attention to the order to use electric light_ in the hold where such can he obtained from the shore, and chums that ttie Harbor Board should supply current at a charge, though the Order-m Council does not read to the effect. This opens up a question ol coiisideiahlo capital expenditure in order to provide current to the lew Hups discharging cargo here at night who ha\e no current installed on the ship.
