APRES LA GUERRE.

WHEN' ALL OUR DREAMS WILL COME TRUE. THE LATEST FRENCH SAYlNG(Specially written for the Gisborne Times by '"Listening Rost/’

SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE

Novevn her 30, 1916. Unquestionably the most frequently heard expression in France to-day is “Apres la. Guerre” (after the war;, and we New Zealanders are becoming rather tired of-it. If we nonchalantly saunter into a restaurant and ash for a solid dish of steak ana onions-, we are at once met with the remark, "No steak, Monsieur; only eggs and Aims. Steak apres la Geurre. Enter an estanunet (drniKin=> house), and ask for a glass of good old British beer, the answer comes at once from the smiling barmaid, JNo English ale, Monsieur; only irencli beer. English ale apres la guerre. Trv and get an ounce of tobacco U for" a soldier of the line, and the same maddening refrain comes forth : “No tobacco. Monsieur - only cigarettes. Tobacco apres la guerre Wliv, if a bold young New Zealand soldier asks a French girl for a kiss, Mademoiselle will at once reply, “apres la guerre, Monsieur.” Indeed, I heard a pretty French maiden actually reply the other day “After the next war, Monsieur.” It has actually got on our nerves, and no wonder we are doing our best, to bring the war to a close. Alter the war, what a time we will have to lie sure ! All our dreams will come true then. We shall be able to sleep like Christians, we shall get leave unlimited; there will be no more route marches with the full up; ne more patrols in “No Alan’s Land , wo will even be able to return to dear old New Zeala ad — I “Apres la Guerre.”
