'TELEGRAPHIC MATCH. EASY WIN FOR GISBORNE. The telegraphic chess match between the Gisborne and Napier clubs was concluded on Saturday evening, and resulted in a substantial win for the local club, the position when play was stopped showing that out of the eight games Gisborne had secured five wins, while one game was drawn and two are to be sent for adjudication.
The -results are as follows: Xo. 1 Board :—-"White, Hicks (Napier) v. Blade, Dow (Gisborne). —This game is unfinished and has been referred for arbitration. The position is very even, blit the advantage, if anything, lies with- Napier. No. 2 Board: White. Schlichting (Irish or no) v. Black, Riddell (Napier). • —A drawn game. No. 3 Board: White, Burt (Napier) v. Black, G. D. Malcolm (Gisborne). —Won by Gisborne. No. 4 Board: White, F. S. Malcolm (Gisborne) v. Black, Fischer (Napier). -Won by Gisborne. No. 5 Board: White, Hosegood (Napier) v. Black, J. W. Witty (Gisborne). —Won by Gisborne. A /particularly brilliant finish. Witty sacrificed a rook to gain a commanding position, and mated then in two moves, leaving his queen en prise. No. 6 Board: White, J. H. Bull (Gisborne) v. Black, Byatt (Napier). —Won by Gisborne. No. 7 Board: White, Staveley (Napier) v. Black, Blackburn (Gisborne). —Unfinished ; referred to arbitration; the Gisborne player has a knight to ftic good. No. 8 Board: White. L. J. Carmine (Gisborne) v. Black, Evans (Napier). —Won by Gisborne. On the results so far the scores a re: Points. Gisborne 5£ Napier ... Even should both the unfinished games be awarded to Napier the local dub will have established ah easy win.
