A young Maori, named Wi Paku Koran, alias Mato Haremoana, appeared! before Mr. AY. A. Barton, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afteimoon. on two charges of horse-stealing- Tire first charge aas that on' March 11, at Port Awanui, he did steal a gelding, valued at L I-, the property of Watene Numa-Numa, and tire second that on February 10, at Port Awanui. he did steal a pony, valued at £B, the property of Mate Harewa. Accused pleaded guilty to both, charges. Senior-Sergt. Hutton stated that ijife accused had previously served sentences for theft and for uttering a false cheque. In February last he had stayed with Mate Harewa, am when ho left took Mate’s pony with him In the following month, ho went to AVatene’s whare, having at that time the pony and: another horse. He also took a. horse of Watene’s -when he left, and wasjater arrested by a Native constable with the two stolen horses in his possession. His Worship imposed, in each case,a sentence of six months’ imprisonment at Napier, the sentences to bo cumulative.
