r I be Cl lief Recruiting Officer (Air. B. At; J3irroll) submitted the following report to the meeting of the Gisborne Citizens’ Defence Committee yesterday:— The Recruiting Sub-Committee rojjoi ttwl that since last report there had been a serious falling-off in enlistments. During the month of February only 65 registrations were made, whilst for January the total was 136, and December 219, November 230, and one week of October 101 However, the Hth draft of Reinforcements was over-subscribed, some extra men being sent to make up a shortage in Napier’s quota. -More mei ?» physically lit, could iuivc been registered, but for the age limit and no discretionary power being allowed the recruiting oificer. The general enquuy bureau and returned soldiers’ .information department had been kept open, and the usual business transacted, which had been a benefit to many.
Air. Birrell said that anything controversial in the report would be kept °Pon till Thursday’s conference. lhe following men have been passed as fit for active service: Lloxani, 1 homas- Gascoyne, single, surveyor’s assistant. Hick’s Bay. (Infantry.) Cameron,-David C-, single, shepherd', AA aeronga-a-iuka ; tliree vearg A. Squadron. (Mounted.) ' Annet-t, John, single, laborer, 118 Ballance. Street. (Infantry.) Dai so, Peter, single, bu.-hman, Ngatapa. llornoman, Mackenzie, married, laborer, G.P.0., Gisborne.
