A Press Association.cable from Melbourne states that, tlie Medina’s New Zealand passengers are: Messrs. AValdocfc, Blythe, Johnstone,' Kelly, Collins, and Young, Mesdames > Rydon (2), Waldock, anl Blythe,- Misses eotn. (2), Waldock, and ' Blythe, Misses Johnstone,.Brown, .and- Young.
The following appointments in connection with the permanent staff at the P.B. Farmers’ Meat Co.’s new works are announced:—Mr. A. If. Burt, of Invercargill, has been / ‘appointed chief engineer, and Mr. p. L. Avey, of the Gisborne Sheep farmers’ Meat Company’s works, first assistant. Both of these officers have been supervising th.e installation of the plant. Hie fellmongery is being placed under the charge of Mr. Mar. Lie, of the Kaiti works, whilst Mr. P. Bowler, of Kaiti, -why lias had Australian and New Zealand experience, has been appointed to have charge of the slaughterhouse. Hi© cooperage will be under Mr. H. Bean of Gisborne. ■ ’
Through the death: of Mr. J. G. Clayton, M.R.C.V.S., senior vjetermaiy officer to the Department of Agriculture, .the Dominion has been deprived of the services of a capable officer. A gentleman who came continually in contact with the late Air. Clayton in the course of departmental duty speaks enthusiastic ally of the services rendered to New Zealand by the deceased. The late Air. Clayton came to the Dominion under eno-ao-e----inent to the New Zealand Government, and in addition to his position in the Department field the responsible position, being principal veterinary officer for the Canterbury districk, holding the rank of lieutenantcolonel. He was acknowledged to be one of the best veterinary surgeons that New Zealand possessed, and' he was continually appealed to by .fellow pioh'ssional men for opinions oh questions of a scientific nature. The safe transport of the horses to Eo-ypt was, m a large measure, due to “the knowledge and painstaking care exhibited by the late Mr. Clayton in supervising tine fitting out of the norse transports, and the gentleman who gave practically lias last ounce ni the interests of the Dominion and the profession ho loved so well, will be greatly missed by a large number of friends.
