GISBORNE-TOLOGA ROAD.

RATEPAYERS CONSIDER LOAN PROPOSALS.

Pakarae Diding ratepayers of th® Cook County Council held a meeting yesterday at the Coronation Hotel, for the purpose of considering a proposal to raise a loan for the construction of the section of the proposed new inland Gisborne-Tologa road which passes through the Riding. Councillor R. C. Murphy, member for the'Pakarae Riding, presided and explained that the success of the whole scheme depended on the decision of the Pakarae ratepayers, as, should they decide to let the mattev drop, the other ridings would also be forced to withdraw from the scheme Or. 6. Reynolds, who attended on behalf of the Tologa Bay Riding, stated -that it had been thought desirable to form a special district-com-prising the Pouawa, Pakarae, and Tologa Bay Ridings, and to rate the whole district for the cost of- construction. Objections had been raised, however, and it was now proposed that each riding should carry out_ its own share of the work. Tologa had! already decided on a £6OOO loan, and would, without doubt, decide on the full amount required being raised, if it was certain that the other ridings would sanction their part of the work. Or. Holden (Pouawa Riding) a]so stated that his ratepayers would raise no objection, and the overseer had already had instructions to lay out the road to ascertain the cost. Mr. T. Fraser, jun., stated that the main objection of the Pakarae ratepayers was that they were expected to carry the road as Far as tho Pakarae bridge site whereas they considered that their section stopped at the Panikau road. It was for the benefit of the Tologa people that they were expected t,o carry the road past that, and it was evident that the Pakarae Riding had enough bridges to maintain It was hard on the Pouawa settlers in the Pakarae Riding to have to contribute to the Pakarae bridge, which they would never use. Mr H Williams remarked that the fact that they had so many bridges was that tho bridges had been built before the best roads had been locatod. Or. Holden stated that they were now trying to rectify that ... Mr Fraser said he thought that « the Tologa ratepayers would bear the whole cost of the Pakarae bridge, the Pakarae people would be willing to bear that of the extra piece of roa<l from the Panikau road to the bridge Slt Mr C. Seymour thought that the Pakarae people would agree to this arrangement. Mr Fraser added that although the Pakarae ratepayers were all in favor of the proposed new road, they were somewhat divided as to the continuation of their section to the bridge site, which practically doubled then Reynolds offered to consult the ratepayers of his riding, with a view to their bearing th 0 whole of the cost of Pakarae bridge, as that seemed to raise the question, conditional on the Pakarae ratepayers carrying their poll fir |l’r Fraser said he thought liis ratepayers would be quite agreeable to this and would carry their poll. The chairman said he would place the position before the County Council, and arrange for a poll of the Pakarae Riding on the lines of that arrangement, and Cr. Reynolds intimated that he would call the meeting of Tologa ratepayers as arranged.
