The Gisborne Racing Club’s summer meeting opened at the Park Racecourse yesterday, in fine but hot weather. There was a good attendance, and' during the' day some excellent finishes were witnessed. The track was in fine order, and fast times, were registered. Tlie president of the Club, Sir Jame s Carroll was present, and the lawns were crowded witli members of tlie fair sex in the latest confections. During the afternoon Vita Bros.’ orchestra played a delightful programme of musical items, and not an accident or an unpleasant incident marred, the day’s sport. For tlie most part good fields contested the different events, no less than fourteen breasting the barrier for the Alaiden Scurry. With the big field of young ones to get away, it was not expected that the start Would be altogether without trouble, but the starter Air R. H. Skipwith, got the bunch away to one of the cleanest and best starts seen _ on the course. Throughout the starting met with tlie fullest appreciation from the spectators. The finishes for the most part reflected credit on the handicapping of Air H. Coyle, and in one or two instances the public were left in doubt as to who had first caught the judge’s eye till the numbers went up. Mr R. B. Lusk capably filled the judge’s box. The new starting barrier, similar to that on leading Now Zealand courses was employed for the first time, with eminently satisfactory results. Alost interest centred in the Cup, and Rupahu’s win proved popular. Ryan received an ovation on his return. The Cup was presented to the owner of the winner (Mr. Davidson) by the president of the Club, Sir James Carroll, on the lawn, and Mr Davidson came in for friendly cheers from the public. The catering was in the capable hands of Air Erskine. The sum of £11.536 was put through the totalisator, as . against £13,805 for the corresponding day last year a decrease of £2269.

PARK HANDICAP, of 135 sovs., second horse to receive 20 sovs. and third horse 10 sovs. from the stake. Seven furlongs. 2 Mr. D. McLeod’s cli h Tavistock, 4yrs, Vasco—Mayhap, 7.7 (Watson) 1 1 Mr. W. Sceats.) These were tho only starters, and Tavistock made no race of it. He led all the way, and entering tho straight was about six lengths to the good, finally winning pulling up. There was a struggle for second place, r Despatch Carrier getting thero by a head.
NOTES ON THE RACING. Hikahakeke and Spectual were withdrawn from the Hurdles, and Kew was made favorite. The latter looked as though he would be better with a few gallops. Scorch retrieved some of her lost laurels by winning nicely after getting away badly. Bravest put up a good fight, but Kew will be sure to do better with racing.
Only four dropped out of the Maiden Scurry, leaving fourteen starters. The start was a splendid one, and Lady Gazeley and Hexton at once assumed command, retaining it to the end. Serbia came from behind and finished a good third and will be heard of again, but Boggits (who was favorite), was not prominent. A pleasing feature was the success of the trainer of the winner, W. Olive, who has had a very bad run of luck. There was brisk speculation in tho Cup, all tho starters being well supported Rupahu finishing up favorite. He justified ■ the confidence of the public, for he won from end to end,
and was going well at the finish. A quarter of a mile from home the field closed on him, but Ryan let his mount out, and he sailed away, winning by a good margin comfortably. The rest of the field were bunched, except Waiorewa, who was eased up when her rider sa-w it was useless. She will be suited by a shorter course. The race for second place was a good one, Pursefiller just failing to get up in time to beat The Summit. Ryan also rode the winner of last year s Cup, Iliad’s Hero. The five top weights were struck out of the To llapara Handicap, and Otara was made a slightly bitter favorite than Surtax. An outrider in Cleft won, and paid a good price, j He is a~ half-brother by Multifid to Gazeium. Lord Ainslie and Bruns- , wick showed out well for a while., and Ohara led into the straight, but the winner smothered them at the finish. Surtax ran very badly over the first bit, but put in a good run in the straight and finished fourth. Only four went to the post for. the Electric, and the outsider Watchful just beat Zeus by a narrow bit Zeus swung out at the corner and lost a longth, which she just failed to regain. Rewanga pulled up lame. Multicpal was made a great favorite for the Welter Handicap, and duly won, but had Jem got out a little earlier he may have troubled the winner. Spain ran a fair race, whilst Multikoff did well under bis weight. Another good favorite in King or Athol just managed to win the Railway Handicap, Beating Lady Multifid after a great finish by a neck. Carburretter ran disappointedly, finishing last. Only three went out for the Park Handicap, and Despatch Carrier was made favorite, but made a wretched showing: in fact, his form was too bad to oe true, and must be very much off color. Tavistock won with ridiculous ease after leading all the way.
