ROWING.
POVERTY BAY CLUB
The races for Cave Bros, trophies were continued last* evening on the Waimata course. Mr A. Kirk acted as starter.
The following crews met for the first round:—J. Mellor (st.) and HJ. Pears scratch, v. J. Johnson (st.) and Bousfield 3sec; A. Drummond (st.) and J. Oween scratch v. It. Patty (st.) and Itakire 2sec; E. Mellor (st.) and It. Eaton isec v. H. Williams (st.) and I). Jones 3sec. J. Mellor’s crew and Johnson’s crew made a very even start, but Mellor failed to draw even with Johnson, who won by half a length after a fast race The race between Mellor and Williams proved a good go. Williams made the best start and took advant.ike of it, and was leading at the new i ■ idge, but the pace proved too fast for Williams, who had not had much training. Mellor, rowing in good style, managed to get a lead of a canvas at the liaiti bridge, which ho increased to a length at the finishing post. Tire Patty v. Drummond race resulted in a win for Drummond’s crew, who were rowing in good style. The following crews will meet tonight for the second round: Johnson (st.) and Bousfield 3sec v E. Mellor (st.) and R. Eaton lsec; A. Drummond (st.) and J. Owen scratch v. B. Stitchbiiry and Hallman 3sec. Mr A. Kirk is starter.
