In another house eight inmates clambered from beam to beam as tho house settled down and when the waters rose they fell exhausted and were drowned. The financial Joss is enormous on the mainland. Soldiers heroically dashed to thee beaches and vainly endeavoured to stem tho tide. Scores of hitherto rich farmers are penniless, and it will ho vears before tho land recovers its fertility.
