GISBORNE SEWERAGE.
NOTHING WRONG
The Chief Health Officer (Dr. Valintine), to whom was referred remarks made by the District Health Officer on - the Gisborne Sewerage scheme in an annual report to Parliament, has writtn to the Borough Council to the following effect: “I beg to inform you that your letter of December 24 was referred to Dr Finch. District Health Officer. He states: (1) That the sum mentioned, £200.000, was intended to refer to the cost of both the sewerage as a system and the water supply, as a sewerage system is impossible without a water supply; (2) that there is nothing in hi s remarks that could in any way be regarded as criticism or comments on the sewerage scheme, as they obviously onlv refer to the house connections for the proper carrying out of which the Borough Council was responsible. The Board, which approved the scheme, could not be held responsible for the defects referred to in the house drains, and in certain points in connection-with the plumbing work.” Dr Valintine added that as soon as
the defects above mentioned were discovered by the Department he went to Gisborne and interviewed Council on the matter, and arranged with them that Inspector Middleton should be sent up t-o assist the Council, and to put this neglected matter on a satisfactory basis. The letter was received without discussion.
