A PLACID DAY. By Telegraph —Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, June 2-5. The particularly placid nature of the proceedings in the House this afternoon is the subject of considerable comment in the lobbies. Some members affect to regard this as a happy augury for a peaceful session, but others attach no special significance to the absence of the manifestation of the party spirit. “It- may only be a calm before the storm,” say some, who point out that it was only to be expected that to-day's proceedings would he quiet in view of the references to deceased legislators, with which the sitting was to conclude. It must also he borne in mind that the Add ress-i n-Reply debate will give members a full* opportunity of ventilating their grievances and indulging in any criticisms of the administration of which they may he disposed to unburden themselves. Next w.eek niay givo a better indication, of the probable character of the session. PARTY CORDIALITIES.
One of the features of to-day’s proceedings was the fad that the Imprest Supply Bill was permitted to pass through without debate. The Prime Minister took occasion to thank the Leader and members of the Opposition for their fQvbearauce in this respect and said that he hoped that this would not be the last occasion during the present session Alien he would have tho opportunity of acknowledging the courtesy of his “friends opposite.” . Sir Joseph Ward, in n fitting acknowledgement of Mr Massey’s, remarks, said that the Opposition; whilst, of course, disclaiming any responsibility for the policy of the Government,' would do everything possible to assist the administration m regard to all matters relating to the war.
