FREIGHT ON COAL FROM NEWCASTLE.

[TO THU EDITOR]

Sir, —It seems to me that the rate of freight on coal cargoes from Newcastle to Gisborne is a matter that should he taken up by the Chamber of Commerce. It costs more to land coal here than any other port in the Dominion. I fail to see why Gisborne residents should be exploited in this manner. A handicap of 8s per ton between the port of Auckland and Gisborne is rather too much. If the difference is on account of smaller vessels having to be employed to come here, I should then suggest that a company be formed to build a lightdraught vessel that would carry from two to three thousand tons and .-t could then be landed here as cheap as at Auckland. If our timber resources are to be develojied there is no reason why we could not give the vessel hack loading as there is a large demand for white pine timber in Australia. The rate of freight, to the different ports of the Dominion are as follows: Auckland 8s per ton, Wellington 9s 6d, Lyttelton 10 s, Napier, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff 10s 6d, Wanganui 13s, Gisborne 16s. What are the freezing works and Gas Company thinking about to allow this to go on? —Yours, etc., ‘ G.J.B.
