THE LEAGUE GAME.
GOOD EXHIBITION ON SATURDAY. GISBORNE (32) v. TURANGANUI (26). With a fine Saturday the League players rolled up in force, and the match Gisborne v. Turanganui was probably the best exhibition of Leaguefootball as it should be played yet given in Poverty Bay. Gisborne set the ball in and play was immediately returned to centre by a good kick from Morell. After several scrums Morell secured. The ball was kicked to Rigby, who raced over and scored, Smith converting. From the kick-off play was very strenuous, both sides throwing the -ball about splendidly, and it was only good tackling on both sides that- prevented scores on several occasions. After Gisborne had been compelled to force, the Turanganui backs got into their stride, and from a good passing rush Morell scored a try. Smith again converted. Gisborne started to liven up, and from a hot attack on Turanganui line, Gilpin drew first blood for Gisborne. Poswillo converted. 10 —5. For the rest of the spell play was mostly in Turanganui’s favor. Rigby and Priestly notched tries, both of which were converted by Rigby. Just on call of half-time, Poswillo scored for Gisborne from a good passing rush. Pera converted, and at half-time the scores read: Turanganui 20, Gisborne 10. Upon resuming- Gisborne started a hot attack, and from a passing rush Kelly dived across. Poesy failed to convert. Gisborne 13 ; Turanganui 20. From the drop out Gisborne still continued to press, and Pera scored a good try. Poswillo failed with the kick. Gisborne- 19, Turanganui 20. From the drop out play stayed at centre for a few minutes till Gisborne secured from the scrum, and Hartley, set his backs in motion. They swept down the field, and the last man (Pera) cut in and scored. Poesy failed with the kick. Gisborne 19, Turanganui 20. Turanganui now livened up and some good passing rushes were instituted -by both sides. From one of the Gisborne rushes Rigby intercepted and scored a splendid try, which was unconverted. Gisborne 19, Turangan'ui 23. Gisborne were not to be daunted, and at once set up a hot attack. From a scrum Gisborne backs got possession and the ball travelled from Kelly to Hartley, Smith, Poesy, Wright, and then back again to Kelly, who scored the best try of the day. He failed to convert his own try. Gisborne 21, Turanganui 23. Play was very fast and furious from now on, neither side gaining . much advantage until Gisborne backs got in motion, and from a splendid passing bout Poesy ran over. Poswillo converted. Gisborne 26, Turanganui 23. From the kick out Turanganui started to press and Smith scored a good try, which* was uncon■'verted, making the scores 26 all. Gisborne had the best of the p’ay from now on, both R. Smith and Kelly notching further tries, both of which Pera failed to convert, and the game ended with the scores—Gisborne 32, Turanganui 26. Mr. Pritchard gave every satisfaction as referee.
