WILL MAKE HOME RULE IMPOSSIBLE.
ULSTER’S DETERMINATION
LORD LOREBURN’e SUGGESTION DISCUSSED.
[UNITED PEE S 3 ASSOCIATION —COPY EIGHT.] LONDON, Sept. 14. Sir Edward Carson, speaking at Durham, replied to Lord Loreburn’s letter suggesting a conference on the Irish question. He said it showed that serious-thinking men at least were 1-ealising the gravity of the situation, but there was no possibility of reconciling Nationalists and Ulstermen. A conference must be abortive. Ulster would never abandon the principle of Government by the Imperial Parliament; outside that they would make many sacrifices to come to an agreement.
Sir Edward Carson said that Lord Loreburn had under-rated the probable disturbance. There was not going to be spasmodic riots if the Bill was persisted in. Ulster was going to make Home Rule impossible. It was the Premier’s duty to save the King from the vortex, and place him on sure ground by advising an appeal to the people. Informal suggestions are being made that the King should take the initiative in calling a conference on Home Rule if all parties are agreeable.
Mr O’Brien states that neither Liberals, Unionists, nor Redmondites can or will refuse to participate if the King invites them. After visiting Lord Lansdowne (Leader of the Unionists in the House of Lords), Mr Bonar Law (Unionist Leader) has gone to Balmoral on the King’s invitation. (Received Set. 15, 6.55 p.m.) Sir Edward Carson, in his Durham speech, opposed the suggestion that the King should take the initiative in calling the suggested Home Rule conference. He deprecated His Majesty being drawn into politics. The only sureg round was an appeal - to the people. -
