Professor Malladra and two companions .descended 1200 feet into tho crater of Vesuvius, and found inside a funnel at the bottom of the crater an enormous fiery cavern. They lost their thermometers through a steel rope fusing. Previous to the mishap the instruments registered 626 degrees Fahrenheit.
