FOOTBALL RUGBY. ?.* TARANAKI DEFEATS manawatu; '■■■'. ■;' [PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM] PALMERSTON N., Aug. 20. The Taranaki representatives defeated Manawatu to-day by 9 points (three tries) to 3 (one try). The game was fast and open throughout. The ground was dry and the weather fine. In the first spell Taranaki had tlie advantage of a strong wind, but Manawatu were able to hold their own until near half-time, when, after a pretty passing bout, Cameron crossed for Taranaki. There was no goal. Soon after, the Manawatu forwards asserted their supremacy, and Johnston crossed the line. The try was unconverted. For more than half the second spell Manawatu had; the visitqrs penned in their own territory, but the Taranaki backs, who were superior to the local backs, made a great effort, and the strain told on the condition of Manawatu. Loveridge and McLeod each managed near the end to scramble across and added six more points, but neither try resulted in a goal. Manawatu were twice within an ace of scoring. An exciting game ended —Taranaki 9, Manawatu 3. The visiting forwards were undoubtedly inferior in pace, cleverness, and combination to the Manawatu men, but their backs, though not verv fast, were cleverer in handling the ball and m tactics. Taranaki went all out, and were lucky to win by a margin of six.
