NEW LYNN RAILWAY SMASH
PUBLIC INQUIRY WANTED.
[PBE3S ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! AUCKLAND, May 30. There is a general fueling that the inquiry to be held into the New Lynn railway collision, .should be of a public nature, and a petition is already in circulation amongst those who were on the wrecked train, urging that the utmost publicity should be given to the whole of the invetsigations. The petition, which is addressed to Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railways, reads as follows:
“Sir, we, the undersigned, who were passengers by the wrecked train on Wednesday morning, 28th inst., learn with indignation that the proposed inquiry into the causes that led to this accident will be of a Departmental nature. Your petitioners beg to request that this decision be revoked, and that the inquiry be (1) a public inquiry, (2) that the scope of the inquiry .shall be; (a) the cause or causes that led to the present accident, (b) the arrangements and working of the railway system, between Auckland and Henderson, having" regard to timetables, watering arrangements, level crossings, island platforms and signalling, (e) any other matters not mentioned above which may affect the safety or efficiency of this .suburban railway system ; (3) that the inquiry shail be conducted by a Magistrate.”
The Departmental inquiry into the circumstances connected with the accident was commenced at 2 p.m. today at the railway offices. It is not open to the press.
