GIFT BATTLESHIP AT CHRISTCHURCH.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. Favored with' lino weather, children’s day on H.M.S. New; Zealand passed off successfully without a hitch. To-day in all over 9000 children from the city schools and 1000 school teachers and committeemen visited the ship, and were, shown over it. Tho arrangements made for carrying out the inspection were complete and efficacious, and the children were greatly interested in and pleased with what they saw. on every side. The greatest enthusiasm and courtesy prevailed—enthusiasm on the part of the visitors and courtesy on the part of the officers and sailors. The arrangements made by tho railway authorities, who ran a double service during tho day to Christchurch and Lyttelton, were worked out excellently. In the afternoon on Lancaster Park a football match was played between a team representing the warship and the Territorials. Tho match resulted: Terirtorials, 26; H.M.S. New Zealand 8

The officers wore entertained at a hall in the evening by members of the Christchurch Club. To-morrow sports will be held on the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s grounds at Addington, and a big attendance is anticipated. MEN’S TRIP TO ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, May 14. Detachments from the New Zealand, qonsisting of 197 seamen and 22 marines, under Lieut. North, arrived in Ashburton at 9.4 b this morning and returned to Lyttelton at 5 p.m. They were heartily welcomed' and royally entertained by the people of Ashburton borough and county, who turned out eti mass to see them.
