'J'ha abattoirs were the subject of some Consideration at the meeting ot the Borough Council last night. The Inspector .and manager of the abattoirs (Mr C. R. Spragg) forwarded the following report for the month : During April there were 276 cattle, 1716 sheep, 9 calves, . and 107 pigs slaughtered at the abattoirs for eon-® sumption within the abattoir aiea. as against 250 cattle, 1492 sheep, 4 calves, and 76 pigs for the corresponding month of the previous year. The list of condemnations for the month was a particularly light one, there being 23 eases of tuberculosis, of which only two were wholly condemned. One sheep was condemned for septic pleurisy. One pig was wholly condemned and seven were partially condemned for tuberculosis. The report was received. The Mayor said while on the subject of the abattoirs, they had to face tile fact that a loss was recorded on their working last year. This, he held, was unbusinesslike, ’as it was not right that revenue should be taken from some other department to make up the loss at the abattoirs. 'The charges were too low, and they would have to he amended. He moved : “That with a view to putting the abattoirs on a self-supporting financial basis the question of the killing rates bo referred to the Abattoir Committee, with instructions to prepare an amended schedule of charges, and to report to the Council.’’ The motion was seconded by Cr. AA'ildish. and carried.
