HOLY TRINITY CHURCH.

OPENING CEREMONY POST-

PONED

The opening ceremony in connection with the new Holy Trinity Church, which was arranged for Sunday next, lias been indefinitely postponed, on account of the illness of His Lordship the Lisbon of Waianu. The Vicar (the Rev. L. Dawson Thomas) was advised yesterday from Napier that Bishop Avoriil was seriously ill with laryngitis and would he unable to leave for Gisborne on 1< rid ay as arranged. The opening ceremony would therefore have to he postponed till a, later date. Mr Thomas was unable to get into communication with His Lordship last evening. AN APPEAL TO PARISHIONERS. A circular which has been issued to the parishioners of Holy Trinity Church includes the following:— “The total cost of the church is £7OOO. In all £3015 has been collected in cash; this is less than half of what has to he found to clear the church of debt. Of the balance, £1.350 has been borrowed upon debentures from parishioners, and a further sum of £1285 can similarly .he taken up. . All these sums 'actually raised will leave £1350 still required to meet the total cost of £7OOO. “The debenture money borrowed, and £1285 which may he borrowed, will entail an interest charge of about £132 per annum, which has to ho provided out of ordinary church income. “We feel that, having in view the imperative necessity of employing one or two curates to assist tho vicar as soon as suitable men can he secured, it is very undesirable to raise any money upon debentures. “We think the immediate raising of £1350 should not he beyond the means of this great and prosperous parish and district. “It is true that the suburban portions of the parish have their own burdens to carry. Mangapapa, Kaiti and Te Hapara have already done excellently in providing sites for future churches and two excellent church halls. And yet the life of tho parish and its heart must he the centre, and the prosperity of all the branches will ho largely dependent upon the vigor of the central church, from which all church activities and actual work must for many years radiate. “Wo have no hesitation in therefore calling upon tho parish and district as a whole to clear tho sum of £1350 required by one magnificent effort on Trinity Sunday. “Many parishioners' who have already very liberally aided the building fund will remember that the sums given have been spread over nearly five years, and that the further gifts we now sock are therefore now not unreasonable even in the light of their previous most generous response to our appeal.''
