THE WELLINGTON GAOL TRAGEDY. DOCTOR’S EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. v At the inquest on Michael Malone, who died in gaol yesterday, Dr. W. K. Fyffe expressed the opinion that the man had been done to death. He was arrested on Tuesday for drunkenness and remanded on Wednesday for curative treatment. Dr. Fyffe commented strongly on the absence of suitable provision for the treatment of such cases and then detailed the result of the post morifem. This showed that deceased had a dozen marks on his body,. including a fracture of the skull 3| inches long. He believed the man had been knocked about. The injuries could not have been inflicted as the result of falling while drunk. Malone had. been kicked or struck with a heavy instrument. After evidence had been given by the police and gaol officers the inquest was adjourned till to-morrow.
