MAKARAKA BREAK-UP

The break-up of the Makara'ka school took place on Friday. Best flower gardens: Standards 11. and liftboys. Writing: Elsie Eade. # In July last the senior pupils* under the direction of Mr. G. Dartonf visited the Gentle Annie bush, lifted some 200 native trees and traqpplanted them in the school groundf. Mr. Darton gave an interesting tenure to the children on tree-planting afforestation, and offered prizes fotthe best essays on the trip to the IrhtJk The winners were Noel Gcdyc aim Nellie Reidy, and these were presented also on Friday. The prizes were presented by the Rev. H. T. Blair, of Matawhero, assisted by Messrs. Evans and Moore, members of the school committee. The Rev. Blair congratulated the teachers on the healthy condition of the school, and in a brief, neat speech encouraged the children to make the best use of present advantages in after life, when they would, he doubted not, more fully appreciate their teachers’ efforts for their welfare. Cheers were given for the teaching staff and for the ,school committee, whose efforts had provided so generous a supply of prizes.
