A CHRISTMAS SERENADE.
(As much as could he gathered of it.) A vouth beneath a window stood. And twanged unon a lute— I think it was a lute he twanged, Or maybe 'twas a flute. His eager gaze 1m turned aloft. And looked with all his might—I moan his eves, whi r h, if net blue. * Were black, or grey, or white. He sang a dreamy serenade. A somotlnrg bv Gounod— If not, it was the popular song Miscalled ,ove thee so! Thou from t"e window such a sigh Caine "floating on the breeze — I fancy ’twa.s a sigh that came. If not, if was a sneeze. “And art thou there, my only own?” Cried out the fervent youth— I think ’twas “only own,'’ he said. Or words as near the truth. “Oh, show thy face, my darling sweet! Oh, show thy face and speak!” I hope ’twas “face” the young man said. It might be only “cheek.” He listened hard for soft reply, And heard a lisping sound— Or else it was a whispering leaf That fluttered on the ground. The window opened, and a form Loomed daintilv in view—
