The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1912.

We feel sure that the people of this portion of the The Arrival of the Dominion will Governor-Designate, heartily join in the welcome which was extended to Lord and Lady Liverpool at Auckland yesterday. “Of middle height, with wellknit figure, dark hair turning grey at the temples, close-cropped moustache, the sunburnt face which speaks of much time spent out of doors, a slight pucker at the corners of the eye that is always found in people with a keen sense of humor, Lord Liverpool at once impresses you as being just the sort of man likely to make a success of tlie important post which he has come cut-

to fill.” Such is the pen picture which ••Our Own” at Auckland gives of the new Governor, who together with Lads Liverpool, arrived at tae Queen City” bv the Malwa from Sydney yesterday. 'He goes on to say: “Lord Liverpool has the heartiest laugh oi any Governor w» have had lor many years. When you combine this with ability and dignity you have an ideal occupant for the Government house. A perfectly natural manner,. s\ steady gaze and a quickness of perception that at oncp-" places him on rapport with and people are attributes that stand a Governor in good gread. Lord Liverpool has them all. inhere is a refreshing absence oi wh/ has so aptly" been termed ‘jM arch.” The Countess of Liverpool /bound to be popular. She. is just as | unaffected as the Governor. She has been described as athletic-looking. This is rather misleading, as it suggests someone with more than a fair share of avoirdupois, a marked muscularity and a mannish manner. Lady Liverpool has none of these. Perhaps it was intended to convey that she was suggestive of outdoor life. This she certainly is. -She is short, .has a fresh complexion like most of Erin's daughters, and dresses quite simply in good taste. She is keen on out-door life, fond of gardening and flowers, and ■ at home spends much of her time looking after her poultry and many farm 1 pets. Lord Liverpool comes of a eric- ] keting family, and is himself very ! keen on the national game of England. Lawn tennis is another favorite pastime of his. He is looking forward to the fishing and other sport'for which New Zealand is famous. It is satisfactory to know that the interest Lord Islington took in the farming community is more than likely to be con- 1 tinned by the new Governor and Lady I Liverpool, as both take a keen interest in all .agricultural matters. At the I ])resent juncture in the history of ter- > j ritorial training in the Dominion, the 1 ! arrival of Lord Liverpool will be spec- 1 ! ially welcomed, as lie is a keen soldier. I j He saw service in South Africa, and ! j lias always closely followed the for- j i tunes of Territorials in the Old Conn- j try, and at present holds a colonelcy j in the Special Reserve Brigade. It is ■ certain that our defence scheme will ; occupy much of His hardship's time.” , During the course of his speech at | Auckland, His Lordship showed in no j uncertain manner that lie greatly ap- ! predated the high honor that His j Majesty had conferred upon him by j appointing him to the Governorship j of New Zealand. Undoubtedly he is 1 the right type of Governor for this Dominion, and should have a very successful term of office. One and ail will, we feel sure, wish Lord and Lady Liverpool a thoroughly enjoyable stay in our midst.
