IMPROVEMENTS HI THE IRON DUKE.
TRIPOD MASTS ABANDONED
[INDEPENDENT PEES 3 CABLE] LONDON, Oct. 7. The battleship HALS. Iron Duke will bo launched on Saturday.
She will have a displacement of 25,000 tons, and a speed of 22 knots, and*her construction will, in several particulars, be different from the types at present afioat. ■ Noticeable alterations will be that she will only carry one mast and two smoke stacks. The tripod mast system has been abandoned, and her single mast will he stayed with wire gingThe new battleship wi'l ho fitted with balancing tanks, to counteract rolling, and will also have submarine telephones attached. HALS. Iron Duke was laid down at Portsmouth on January 15 this’ year. Her armament will consist of 10 13. Sin guns of the new design, firing a shell of 14001 b. as compared with one of 12501 b for the 13. Sin guns of the H.M.S. Orion class. There will be a powerful secondary battery of Gin guns.
