TRADES COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Trades Council was held last night in Townley’s Hall, the president (Mr. J. C. E Turner) occupying the chair. There was a fair attendance of delegates.

A letter was received from tho Gisborne branch of the Auckland Hotel Employees' Union, giving _ three months’ notice of their intention to secede from the Council. The chairman stated that it was a nitv that any union should leave the Council at the present stage, as tho Council would automatically terminate at the end of the vear, giving place to a now hodv under the constitution of the United Labor Party. Other sneakers expressed the same opinion. The notice was accepted. Tho Wellington Trades Council wrote asking if the Gisborne Council intended to be represented before the Parliamentary Labor Bills Committee when they discuss the Conciliation and Arbitration Act Amendment. It was decided to appoint Alessrs. J. 0. E. Turner, G Bartlett. J. H. Hall, A. H. Anderson, and D. AY. Coleman to he a committee to consider amendments to the Arbitration Act, and to report at next meeting, when the question of representation would be considered. The Wellington Trades Council also wrote drawing attention to a recent Chamber of Commerce motion. re placing on the Statute Book legislation compelling all unions to be registered under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and to bring strikers under the Penal Act. It was decided to write to the Prime Alinister protesting against the passing of such an Act. . The same Council "also wrote .asking the Gisborne Council to sustain a protest against legislation being passed to prevent unions appointing independent secretaries, and to compel them to appoint onh- men who are actually .working in the trade to which the union applies of which they may be secretary. It was decided to write to members of the Legislature residing in this district protesting against such legislation. Telegrams were received from the United ’Labor Party stating that Air. McManus would shortly be paying a. visit to Gisborne for organising purposes. ' The deputation sot up bv tho trades Council to wait upon the several unions re affiliation to the United Labor Party reported that they had visited five unions, and had received a very favorable hearing. The report ’was received. . ~ , It was decided to write to the newly formed- Tailors’ Union asking them to favorably consider affiliation to tho Council , , The meeting during general business considered matters in connection with the coming Labor Day celebrations. To further consider details it was decided to call a. special meeting at a date to be arranged.
