LADIES’ HOCKEY TOURNAMENT.

FOURTH DAY’S PLAY. POVERTY BAY.AGAIN VICTORIOUS ANOTHER BRILLIANT AND - HARD-FOUGHT CAME. Poverty Bay ... ... % Manawatu ~ * [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 11. The New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey lournament was continued to-day, in fine weather, the matches being n]aved at St. Alban’s Park. The grounds, however, were not as good as those at Sydenham Park, the grass being mu oh too long in places. '} he attendance of spectators was again good. The matches for the day resulted:— B Sscticn. Canterbury A (4) v. Buller (0). Auckland (2) v. Wellington (2). Wanganui (4) v. West Coast (1). A Section. Canterbury B (2) v. Taranaki (0)_ Wairarapa (1) v. Nelson (0). Poverty Bay (.2) v. Manawatu (1). The Canterbury A v. Buller match resulted in a win for the former by 4 goals to nil. The play of the Canterbury team was much superior to that shown by them on the previous day, due largely, no doubt, to the fact that they were meeting a weaker team. The Buller girls were weak in tackling and in marking, and their stick work was not too good. The long grass troubled them. The Canterbury B v. Taranaki match was a very even contest, and seemed likely to result in a draw. Taranaki were the faster team, but Canterbury B were superior in passing and placing. Their circle work, however, was anything but' goodQuite a number cf chances to score were missed. They were very lucky

towards the latter P art of the second spell in scoring two goals. The Auckland v. Wellington match provided" an interestin'/ contest. Auckland missed chances on several occasions through their wings keeping the hall too long before centreing. Prominent players for the _ winners were Miss Cccke and Miss Wylie, and for the lasers Miss McDonnell and Miss Harris. The game between V airarapa and Nelson was disappointing. V airarapa attacked consistently, and frequently reached the goal. Wanganui got the better of West Coast bv 4to 1. The game'was a fast and interesting one, the forward werk of both teams being unusually good. Miss Ivy Perrin (Wanganui) showed herself particularly gcod both at dribbling and driving. One of the players. Miss Kirkpsti, got hurt, but she recovered sufficiently to continue with the game. Manawatu put up a gcod fight against Poverty Bay, which, however, was the faster and mere powerful team. Though the game was full of movement and incident, the resulting score was only 2 to 1. There were numerous rushes Hn and down field, and the Poverty Bav team showed that it had some good runners among its members, while Manawatu. thou Mi its tactics were, perhaps, less brilliant, shone at defence work. . Goals were scored bv Misses Fairlie and Pearce for Poverty Bav and Miss W. Hodder for Manawatu. MANAWATU POVERTY BAY (Black aud green). (Red). Misses: Misses: E. Kerslake Goal E- Fromm F.
