South of England the weather was fine and the wicket easy. Webster, Emery, Wliitty and Smith were omitted from the Australian team. Chaplin won the toss, and the Englishmen batted. Hobbs’ first hall hit the wicket. Barrett showed fine driving, and made eight fours. He played a clianceless innings. Fifty appeared in 55 minutes, and 100 in iOO minutes. Simms batted splendidly all round. Re]f gave, a brilliant exhibition of driving. He scored a sixer and seven fours.
Two hundred appeared in 160 minutes'. Vine hatted for 260 minutes, and hoisted his eenturv in 235 minutes. He showed splendid defence and good driving. He got 14 off one of Minnett’s overs. He played a chanceless innings, his score including a fiver and 14 fours. Kidd, after being howled bv a nohall from Kell-ewav. was missed at 2 before scoring. He made 60 in 65 minutes.
