LONDON MARKETS. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] LONDON, Aug. 4. "Wheat- is dull. Buyers are only filling immediate wants, and there is no speculation. The harvest lias commenced in the South of England. It is progressing rapidly and favorably in Russia, but rains have interfered with the harvest in France and Germany. Cargoes are firmly held, and there is little offering. Holders are asking 40s, and 39s (id*is obtainable for a New South Wales off-coast shipment; 39s is asked for a Victorian May shipment, 37s 6d for Australian Januarv-February cargoes, whilst 38s lias been paid for a parcel of July shipment. There is a quiet demand for spot, but prices are unchanged. Oats are quiet. “A” Gart-ons, on passage, 24s ; La Plata June-July shipment 16s 6d. Butter is firm. Danish 129 sto 130 s. Colonial is in small supply. A lew sales of the choicest Australian have been made at from 108 s to 110 s; unsalted 110 s to 112 s; secondaries, 98s to 101 s. New Zealand Ills to 116 s. Cheese is firm and unchanged. At the wool sales yesterday a miscellaneous selection was offered, competition was maintained and rates were unchanged. The following prices were realised for the- fleece portions of the clips named: Monte, top price 9id, average 8;]cl; Manganui, 9ld and 9d; Robinson 15d and 11yd. The Bradford wool market is firm, but a quiet holiday tone prevails. At the sheepskin sales 8022 bales were catalogued, but 1100 were not shown owing-to the strike. There was .good competition, and nearly all those shown were sold. Merinos verevery firm. Crossbreds were a farthing dearer.
The tallow stocks amounted to 5696 casks; imports 2874 casks, deliveries 1792.
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLI
[PER- PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Aug. 5. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, August 3, states: The strike terminated, and work will bo resumed. The mutton market is quiet but firm. Canterbury 3Jd to 4yd- according to quality. North Island 3gd to 4yd. The lamb market is weakening, with signs.-of a decline, there being a large supplv. Canterbury old to Gd ; other than Canterbury 5d to s|d. The bee? market is dull. New Zealand hindquarters 3-Jcl, forequarters 3RL The butter market- is firm, with a general active demand for best quality. The average price for the-week for choicest New Zealand butter is 116 s, Australian Ills, Danish 128 s, Siberian 108 s. The cheese market is firm, with more enquiry. New Zealand white 65s 6el, colored 66s 6d. Hemp: For Now Zealand the market is quiet at an advance. On spot New Zealand good to fair grade £25 10s, fair grade £23 15s, forward shipment about the same prices. In Manila a largo business is doing, and prices are strong in the market. Fair current Manila £25, forward shipment £26. The output from Manila for the week was 31,000 bales. The linseed market is quiet, the price being slightly weaker. New Zealand, nominal value, 60s.
