THE MEDITERRANEAN FLEET.
EMPIRE’S PRESTIGE ENDANGERED. [UNITED PRJ3SS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHTJ (Received June 27, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 27. Lord Roberts, addressing the National Service League, said he hoped that the country would speedily realiso that the withdrawal of the Mediterranean fleet would endanger the Empire and would lower its prestige in Egyptian and Indian eyes. In the House of Comons the Premier, in reply to a. question, said that the naval fo :, oa of t--c Mediterranean was still under consideration and the Imperial Defence Committee would bo consulted. Lord Charles Beresford, in a letter to the newspapers, says that the fleet is short of between 4000 and 5000 men on active service, and 20,000 for future requirements, and we have more shins atitliis moment than we can use. Mr. Churchill (First Lord ‘ of the Admiralty) announced that the review at Spit-head on July 9 would reveal the greatest fleet- ever assembled in tlie world’s history.'
