The South Africans followed on, 183 runs behind. Faulkner and Hartigan faced Kelleway and Matthews. r Faulkner’s luck was out. The third* ball, a break-back from Kelleway, beat him, and he retired without scoring.
Hartigan had made a single—l—ll. Nourse was next, and Whitty relieved Matthews at 22. The change effected a separation quickly, Nourse being taken by Bardslev at third man. off Whitty’s first over. ’ He made 18. —2—22. Sncoke filled the vacancy. In the next over Hartigan succumbed to a. good ball from Kelleway. He scored only 4. 3—22. Taylor was the next batsman, and promised to stop the rot, but this an-' ticipation was not fulfilled>At 45, a good length ball from Whitty found Snooke’s wicket. He made 9. 4 15. \ White was the incomer. Fifty was reached in 65 minutes. At 56 Matthews went on again in place of Whitty. Fourteen runs later White was taken at the wicketg off Kellewav. 5 70.
Schwarz filled the breach. The next over saw Matthews repeat his first innings performance of accomplishing the “hat trick.” His first victim was Tavlor, who had scored 21. 6—70. Mitchell, the next man, was caught right-handed bv Matthews off his own bowling. 7—70Ward followed, but in attempting a stroke he fell over, and was bowled by Matthews without scoring. B—7o. Matthews’ fine performance was greeted with warm applause, and he was congratulated heartily by his colleagues. Beaumont filled the vacancy. The Australian bowling continued too good. In the next over Mitchell was beaten by a good ball from Kelleway without scoring. 9—98. Pegler was the last man, but the partnership did not last long. Beaumont, when 17, was beaten by Kelleway. 10—95. Pegler was left not ont with 8 to liis credit. The innings lasted 95 minutes* 2,4, 22, 5. ’ Matthews, 1, 38, 3. Whitty, 6. 3. 15, 2.
