“NOT A HAPPY FAMILY.”
THE AUCKLAND HOSPITAL BOARD.
SEQUEL TO THE RECENT SQUABBLE.
MEETINGS TO BE ABANDONED
IN THE MEANTIME
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, May 29
The Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board lias not been a liappy family during the last few months, and a crisis was reached as a result of the scene which occurred at last night’s meeting. The Board consists of ten members and in numbers is equally divided. Up till last month tlie section of which Mr P. M. Mackay was leader had the balance of power, for Mr Mackay as chairman had casting vote upon all subjects. When the time came last month for the annual election of chairman, however, Mr. H. Schofield was nominated by the opposing faction, and each nominee received five votes. In this case according to law there was no casting vote and so the two names were put in a hat, the result being in Mr Schofield’s favor. The Board then had to face questions of complaints against hospital administration, on which they were in numbers again equally divided, and as indicated, a deadlock has now occurred.
Mr. M. J. Coyle, one of the five members who abruptly retired from last night’s meeting, this morning informed your representative that the meeting which Mr Schofield was calling for Friday morning would not eventuate, for there would _ he no quorum, and until the Minister for Hospitals appointed the Magistrate or some other independent tribunal to go into question of hospital administration there would he no further meeting of the Board in committee on this question.
