BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.
CONFERENCE WITH MR. METCALFE.
"WORK OF RECONSTRUCTION ENDORSED.
Speaking to a Gisborne Times reporter relative to the conference with Mr Metcalfe, the consulting engineer, regarding the water supply, the Mayor stated that Mr Metcalfe endorsed the work of reconstruction of the pipe line that was now being carried out by the Borough Engineer, and he was of opinion that a settling tank and a reservoir should he istalled in connection with the ( system. As the Hospital Hill site could not be acquired for a reservoir, he could not recommend any other site. In consequence, tlie Mayor stated, the Council had agreed to' go on with the Borough Engineer’s proposals for a settling thnk and storage accommodation at the bottom of the creek. Mr Metcalfe had stated that while the gauging showed an adequacy for present requirements, in the absence of reliable data he was unable to give any indication as to how long it would be' sufficient. Next summer, he thought, would give them a fair estimate as to the demand and the supply. It would, lie thought, be a good thing if the Council made investigations; as to a supplementary supply for future requirements. It was most satisfactory to hear Mr Metcalfe’s statement, and he (the Mayor) was confident that when the headworks were restored and storage accommodation provided there would be an ample supply for the present.
