AN UNAPPRECIATED GIFT.
A NURSE AND A CROCODILE.
An old bushman who had undergone a severe but successful operation in a 'North Quensland hospital, was very grateful to his nurses. “Them’s real good girls,” he said to his mates. “You see if I don’t send ’em something nice; something that these town blokes can’t give ’em.” The “something” came a fortnight later in a young crocodile. “Yours is the only hospital that’ll have one, sister,” he wrote, “an’ you won’t be troubled with no dogs, or cats, or carpet snakes, when this covey grows up a bit. He’ll eat anything.” The recommendation was too universal. The sister had visions of agreeable and highly-trained nurses disappearing mysteriously—possible trouble in maintaining a staff. The old fellow was much disappointed when he heard that the ungrateful nurses had sent bis humble offering as a gift to the Brisbane museum. No doubt the crocodile was disappointed too.
