MORE ABOUT THE VICTIMS OF THE TRAGEDY.
THE ONLY WITNESS AN INFANT Later.—The deceased woman was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Parkes, who at present reside at Tologa Bay, Mr Parks being occupied in the blacksmithing business in the coastal township. They occupy a small house near the bridge. Mr and Mrs Reid were married at Ekotalnma some three years ago, and there was one child l —aged about two
years—of the marriage. A most pathetic feature, by the way ‘ is the fact that this little one, now bereft of its parents was the only eye-witness of the awful tragedy. Reid himself was not by any means a stranger to Tologa Bay, as some years aop when the store now known as the Tologa Bav Trading Coy., was being carried on‘by. Mr G. H. Williams, the deceased was in the employ oi the him in the capacity of driver of a. cart. He left that employment, however, ana came nearer*, to Gisborne. He was engaged for some time on Borough works, and subsequently—only very recently—took up the occupation of stableman at the hotel—fated to he his last billet, “Something must have gone wrong. ”... The late Mi's Reid was a passenger by the coach from Gisborne to Tologa Bay on March 13th—the day on which the coach capsized at the Puatae rocks; but she escaped with only very minor injuries. ' “I never was more shocked and surprised in all my life than to hear of it” exclaimed a friend of the deceased man’s, when speaking to a representative of this journal. “I cannot understand what came over Walter to do such a thing. I knew him pretty well, and I tell you he was a quiet, sober young fellow, and one you’d never think would harm anybody. Something that we know nothing of, or indeed, never will now know anything of, must have been wrong.” An inquest will be held at the Tologa Bay Hotel at 11 a.m. to-day, before Mr W. E. Holden, J.P., Acting Coroner.
