RECIPROCITY DEFEAT.
PRESIDENT TAFT SPEAKS.
“I EXPECTED A DIFFERENT RESULT.”
Interviewed at Peoria, Illinois, regarding the Canadian elections. President Taft said: *‘l expected a different result.”
The President added, “It takes two to make a bargain, and if Canada declines to be a, party to' the reciprocity agreement we can still go on doing business at our old stand.” Questioned as to whether all the talk about annexation had' not helped to bring about the defeat of reciprocity, Mr. Champ Clark. Speaker of the House of Representatives, replied: “No, it did not do half as much as President Taft’s speech in which he insisted on hurrying up with reciprocity before could establish an imperial policy of preferential tariff's with her colonies.”
