SHIPS OFFICERS’ STRIKE.

THE POSITION IN THE SOUTH. IS A SETTLEMENT PROBABLE ? (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Oct. 10. In consequence of the trouble with the officers engaged in the coastal 1 shipping trade in the north, the steamers Victoria and Ulimaroa. would not accept any cargo, here to-day, for transhipment at northern ports. The g.s. Breeze is due here to-morrow, and if the officers adhere, to their previously expressed intentions, they will then leave the vessel. The local agent for the vessel, however, expressed, the opinion that tlie officers were duty bound to remain on the Breeze until she reached her home port—Lyttelton, The Breeze has no cargo to unload hero, but there is a fair quantity here to be. loaded for northern ports. If the men come ashore, the Breeze will have to be laid up in Dunedin. MISGUIDED SYMPATHY. OFFER FROM WATERSIDE WORKERS. TIMAR.U, Oct- 10. The wharf laborers did not start this morning. A meeting was held, when they assembled, and it was decided to cease work, as a means of helping the steamer officers to a speedy settlement. This .decision is to apply to all steamers aud the Putiki and Ivia Ora were affected . A telegram sent to the Merchant Service Guild brought a reply of thanks for sympathy, but that. sUcli action was not necessary at present, as a settlement was in. prospect. A reply to a message to the same effect sent to the Union Federation, was that as they did not understand tre union's action, they advised them to go to work. Work was therefore resumed at 1 p.m. THE CHURCH AND THE WORKER. SYMPATHY FROM BAPTIST ASSEMBLY. (Received Oct. 11, 1.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct, 10. The Baptist Assembly, passed a resolution! of sympathy with the workers of Australasia in their attempts to obtain their just aims and aspirations-
