WRONGED HUSBAND’S GENEROSITY
A DIVORCE PETITION. LPER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J AUCKLAND, August 14. A petition, for divorce lodged by Thos. Cargill, chief engineer on tiie Palvona, against Mary Jane Cargill,with Michael iVtcCiair named as co-respondent, adultery being the allegation, was heard at the Supreme Court this afternoon. The parties we,re married in 1893 at Fifz■roy, Me .'bourne, and lived happily together for some years till, in 1899, Mrs. Cargill, who had gradually been succumbing to drink for some time, completely gave way and associated with immoral people. Several efforts were made to reclaim the woman, but to not purpose. In 1900 petitioner left his wife, hut paid her an allowance of £2 a week from that year up to November last when lie reduced the amount to £1 a week because of what he had heard and had ‘ continued to pay the latter sum up to the present time. Evidence was given that respondent and corespondent had lived together in a cottage as a married couple, “This petitioner has behaved with extraordinary generosity towards his wife,” remarked His Honor m granting a, decree nisi, to be made absolute m three months.
