PROPOSED LIGHT RAILWAY.
te karaka to waiapu valley.
MINISTER MAKING INQUIRIES
The proposal .made ib~ Cr. Matthews at a recent meeting of the Cook County Council regarding a light line of railway from Te Karaka to the Waiapu Valley was again before that body yesterday. A letter was read from] the Waikolni County endorsing the resolution by the Cook County Council regarding the light railway, and stating tliait they would support every endeavor to have toe same carried into effect The Minister of Public Works wrote acknowledging the Council’s application: for the authorisation of a survey of a. line for a light railway from _ To Karaka station to a point in the Waiapu County. He stated that he was inquiring into th© position of matters, and would communicate with the Council later on. The Chairman remarked that there was a considerable difference between the reply received from the Waikohu County Council and the Waiapu County Council. Mr. Matthews said that the arguments usd by the Chairman of the Waiapu County Council were quite fallacious. It was stated that because they were served bv the sea they did not require a raihvav. Such an argument would appeal more to the GishorneNapier line, for after leaving Wairoa this line went over a succession of ridges. Th© route to Waiapu was through very fine country, and the topography lent itself to the 1 construction of the line. He thought a copy of the Waikohu County Council’s letter should be forwarded to the ActingPremier and Mr. W. D. S. MacDonald, M.P.. and they, as well as the chairman (the Hon. Captain Tucker) should be asked to do all! in their power to forward the matter. _ , After some further discussion, this suggestion was agreed to.
