.Among the ranks of Federal Labor members (says ,a. recent issue;:; of the “Sydney ■■ Morning Herald”) 'tjhqr© is. considerable perturbation over the emphatic negativing .of the Government Referenda proposals by the electors, and. in 12 out of 17 direct Labor -seats,'-and. in the two divisions- represented by Ih-’ dependents who support the Government. There is a feeling that something untoward for the Government may develop out of the existing situation’, and since the; numbers went up there has been among Federal Labor members in Sydney much laying together of ' heads and anxious speculation as to what the future holds in .store. The 1 general feeling, is that Mr. Hughes has mad© a colossal faux pas, and lias got his party into a tight corner. From expressions on the part of State and Federal •members, it would appear that the Referenduni was decided upon more or less hurriedly in caucus as the result of the a Acting-Prime Minister’s strong personality and. insistent advopacy, .and the party are now reproaching themselves for not having taken a more deliberate view of the possible consequences «f such an appeal to the people.
