2 CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
[To the Editor.-] Sir. —I was over at the Gisborne Shcepfarmers’ Freezing Coy.’s works, Haiti, to-day, and found a most disgraceful state of affairs. Slicep aic being sent in in thousands, and there "being no water in the paddocks, nearly half broke out yesterday (Sunday) and got to the salt water. Fifty were found dead this morning, and bO more will breathe, their lust breath to-night through thirst. Now, what cv’.wd be worse than this? What is of Cruelty to Animals doing? The Slaughterhouses Act, I hear, makes provision for this by stating that stock shall bo provided with plenis of food and water. Is not theCompany under a penalty for this? The Inspector at the works or tlio Government Veterinarian, or whoever is in authority under the Act, cannot be doing their duty to the Department of Agriculture and all concerned. I am, etc., “CRUELTY;” Gisborne, Feb. 8. have made enquiries front the 'jlki tager of the Freezing Works Company, who states that there was drinking water available for sheep in the paddock from which the mob broke away. He also states that our correspondent has greatly over-estimat-ed the number of sheep which died through drinking salt water. Ed. ;: a.T.”]
