WANGANUI, Dec. 18

Arnst and.. Webb were the guests of tho Rutile Maoris this afternoon. Weki Kemp presented the champion with a mat and greenstone axe. Mrs Webb was presented with a flax handbasket.

Arnst remarked that, being a New Zealander, it was his wish that a 113 future race for the championship should be rowed in New Zealand waters.

Speaking at a banquet on Thursday night, Webb said ho had not yet given up all hope of regaining the championship. Ho was going into training, and if lie could get sufficient pace he might issue it challenge. It is aiow openly said in town that Webb .was suffering 'from rheumatism ■in the arm on the day of the race, and that his condition caused anxiety for somo time past. Webb, however, gives no authority for this rumor, and states that he was beaten by a bettor man. A private letter . received from iSvdney to-day states that a rumoi was current on the other side >.ast week that Webb was suffering from rheumatism 'in his left arm.
