There was a very large attendance at tlu' opening ot the athletic championship meeting. Tho weather was dull, hut fine, and at the close ol the day’s proceedings New South Wales had scored three championships, New Zealand two, Tasmania I. Owing to the press being kept a considerable distance from the running track, they were not able to ,vive a satisfactory description of the racing. Marker first led, but was displaced by Davis and Fislier. When within 100 yards of home Bai'ker put in a capital sprint, and won easily by ton yards, with three yards between second and third.
