TE AUTE ASSOCIATION.
MAORI NEWSPAPERS. Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. Tho question of running a Maori newspaper aroused a good deal of discussion at the sittings of the Te Ante Association. One speaker pointed out that European papers could not reach the Maori population, and hat it was neccrsary to have a paper which would combine interest with vitality. Many speakers spoke approvingly >f the plan, but it was generally agreed that the existing Maori paper, the “Pipiwharauroa,” which was under 'lie control ol tho Association, should ’>e taken in hand, enlarged, and filled tvith subjects that would be of general interest to all the Maori people. f lhe Rev. F. Bennett said that he vas instrumental in the founding of he “Pipiwharauroa.” At that time here were many rival papers in the '“ld, but now the “Pipiwharauroa” done was left, and it remained with '.he Association to make that the one Hnori paper, and to eliminate matter vliicli was of purely local interest, hereby making it acceptable to all the tribes. Air Te AVheroa then put forward a notion, which was seconded and earned, to the effect that the “Pipiwharauroa” be made the standard Ala iri paper.
