THE REMOVAL OF OLD BUILDINGS
DISCUSSED BY THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. At tlio Borough Council mooting lust evening, Cr. I’ettie brought up the matter of the removal ol old buildings, referred to in the .correspondence columns of the Times. Ho had, he said, been questioned whether this course was wise, and desired the inspector’s statement of the matter. The Council should, the thought, take up a strong position on this matter, and lie would like on opinion from the Council. Nothing could bo erected in tho nature of an eyesoro or from an insanitary point ol view. Tho by-laws showed that tho inspector's permission had first to bo obtained. Cr. AVhinray referred to tho caso mentioned, and said that it was removing a building from an important locality to a loss important one. The Inspector, Mr. J. It. Little, said that permission had been applied for, but not yet granted. A lot of tho stuff was new, and vory littlo was bad. The material to bo put in tho second building would bo good. Cr. I’ettie said that ho had heard a great deal of dissatisfaction expressed, and ho wanted to satisfy tho public mind. Tho Mayor said that tho_ public came to an opinion from seeing tho material carried away, but it would not all be used. Cr. Pottie remarked that they did not want the suburbs made hideous. Ho suggested that it would be as well to have a periodical report from tho building inspector as to what buildings were removed, etc. Tho Inspector stated that plans could be seen at any time. It was decided to carry out tho suggestion.
