The Department of industries ami Commerce has received' the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 22nd inst.: Tluv mutton market is quiet. Canterbury brands are .scarce, and are quoted at-d-Jd. Australian mutton, of which there is a large supply, is quoted at 2jd. Iliver Elate mutton is also m large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale at 3d. The lamb market is quiet. There is a fair demand for New Zealand) brands, and supplies are increasing. Canterbury land) is quoted at sfd, other than Canterbury sfd. The beef market is steady.” Hindquarters are quoted at 3-id, forequarters 2Jd. The butter market is very unsettled, and transactions are very limited on. account of the high prices. Buyers of butter are holding .back, expecting the price to go lower, and substitutes are being piisheS' for sale, some holders forcing sales. The following are current quotations: New Zealand 1465, Australian 1445, Danish 148 s. The cheese market is firm, the stock being held in few hands. White makes are quoted at 625, colored 635. There is a better demand for cheese. The hemp market is dull, and transactions are light. Heavy shipments are exneoted from Manila- for some time. Current quotations: Good fair, on spot, £27 ; fair grade, on spot £26; fair current Manila, on spot, £27; March and May shipments, good fair grade, £26 10s; fair grade £25 10s; f air current Manila £26 10s. The cocksfoot market is a shade 'weaker, and buyers are not- keen to do business. Bright clean dressed seed, weighing 171bs to the husliek is quoted at 7-is. The wool market is quiet. Bradford tops arc quoted at Jd low-, or than last week. The hop market is very depressed, although there is a moderate supply, and the prospects are favorable-. American lions aro being pushed for sale at 40s. English hops are quoted at 60s per cwt for best quality, 40s per cwt for good, middling quality.
