NEW ZEALAND BAND CONTEST.

THE OPENING DAY. Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 24. The Band Contest opened to-day, with the baritone solos. Owing to the South Island Band missing the train connecting at Wellington on Saturday morning, the hour for starting was .postponed from 9 a.m. till 2.30 p.m., to enable competitors from south to have an opportunity of competing. Only one or two, however, did so. and the committee was unable to defer the starting any longer without upsetting the whole programme.

Following are the -results : Baritone selections: W. Munro (Ist battalion, Auckland), 67 points, 1; G. A. Day" (Nelson Garrison), 60 points, 2; G. Jensen (Wanganui Garrison (65 points), 3. Others who competed-were:—E. Gilbert (Ist Battalion), 64; iH. Fla-tt (Nelson), 60; G. Austin (Taranaki Garrison), 59; B. -May (Hastings), 60: J. Weir (Manaia), 53; A. S. Fulljames (Auckland Mounted Rifles), 61.

The judge (Lieut. Herd) stated that the baritone music was -a treat. Sixty was -the maximum points for music, the balance being allowed for the class of music.

Only three competed in the flugel horn solo; the others not having arrived. H. Gould (Wanganui) was first with 66; G. Pearce (Taranaki), second, 63; A. N. Hawkins (Ist Battalion), 61. The weather at present is showery, but shows signs of clearing. Later.

Woolston, Mornington, Palmerston North, and Mar ton bands arrived tonight, and expressed -disappointment at being unahio to compete in the afternoon solos. To-night’s quartettes were decided, resulting as -follows: —Nelson Garrison, “Operatic Airs,” 77; Auckland Ist Battalion No. 1, “Oberon,” 75 points; Woolston No. 1, “Ruegenot,” 74; Hastings, 73; Mornington No. 1, 73; Maste-nton, 72; Auckland Battalion No. 2, 71; Woolston No. 2, 71; Mornington No. 2, 69; Taranaki Garrison, 69. The winners, the judge stated, gave a very fine performance indeed, Auckland being not very far behind. The quartettes as a whole afforded liini a good deal of pleasure.
